The email sent out earlier this week was intended to serve multiple purposes:

  • Updating all contacts with my new contact information
  • Inform rolodex that I was “back on the market”
  • Introduce LaBruinBear.com blog
  • Stir up entrepreneurial interest
  • Solicit ideas about new potential ventures
  • Just let everybody know that I was alive and kicking and hadn’t really gone into early retirement, as my Shopzilla colleague David Weinrot would have others believe.

So, the question remains. Was I able to accomplish these goals? I am happy to inform you all, with a resounding YES that I not only achieved each of the goals outlined above but surpassed, beyond even my own reasonable expectations. Consider the following results of this simple, mass email, marketing tactic:

  • Meetings with 8 different contacts in SF next week scheduled, from established start-up with A round financing to colleague within comparison shopping space currently working on business plan
  • Call with Brad Hoover from General Catalyst Partners, venture capital firm with over $1B under management, regarding positions within portfolio companies
  • 4 innovative business concept “pitches” by passionate entrepreneurs
  • 500 visitors to the LABruinBear.com site with the very first comment posted!

So, yes, this was a very successful strategy!

Mass email gets a bad wrap. Not all of it should be considered spam. I often need to distribute important infromation to my San Diego real estate clients. If there is a business connection and a willing recipient, then it is a respectible technique. Then again, if I were to get spam mail after blog posting I would be quite upset. Good job, and congrats on your accomplishments.

I suppose you don’t know how succesful this could have been if you did it personally although I don’t know how long that would have taken.

Sometimes you have to use mass emails but I always do some personilization for the top 10 or so contacts. I’m maybe not as succesful as you but I do get some success each time.
