It should really come as no surprise that LABruinBear.com has audience, largely made up of professionals from some of the leading media properties online, considering my primary marketing method to date has been via contacts from within my own rolodex. However, as I begin to leverage the various online marketing tools, including Google for SEO and MyBlogLog, I have begun to expose the site to many independent entrepreneurs from all corners of the internet, including bloggers, boutique marketing professionals and other venture backed start-up company founders, all joint together by a common thread of business creation and the drive to succeed.
My inbox has been filled the past few days with countless stories of others “taking the plunge” and “pursuing their dreams,” along with a healthy dose of new job opportunities and innovative business ideas pitched for me to pursue. And just so you all get a sense of the diversity of the crowd involved, let me run through just a few of the most interesting responses that I have received thus far.
- Stacey Olliff, SVP, Legal & Business Affairs, Fandango.com - Not entirely surprising that my good friend and colleague Stacey decided to give me a “shout out” on the blog and my decision to move on from Shopzilla. Stacey left Shopzilla over a year ago( I don’t have the exact timing here) for bigger and better things at Fandango, which recently sold to Comcast. I guess Stacey is the first person that would recommend taking the plunge and moving on to the next great opportunity.
- Max Mead, COO Building Green TV and previously VP Business Strategy CNET Networks –I had not yet known that Max was no longer with CNET and that he himself had moved to a start-up, until I received his incredibly positive response:
“Wow, congrats Steven! Exciting stuff, I will follow your adventures! best, Max”
- Tim Ogilvie, VP Business Development, IAC Company, Pronto – It seems that my competitors from my shopping days are some of the most supportive people of ALL.
Check out this positive response:
“Hi Steven, Good luck Steven. I’m excited to watch the progress via your blog. Let me know if I can help.”
- Andrew Federici, VP MTV Networks - I know Andrew from my days of “pitching” Ask for their shopping partnership. Though we never did any business together, he has been just as supportive as many others that I have done business with. No doubt he understands what a significant career move is all about, given his recent move to MTV. He even managed to respond via Blackberry. Thanks Andrew!!
“Congrats on your path to entrepreneurship-very exciting. Look forward to reading your blog.”
- Arul Velan, Business Development Facebook -I actually met Arul while interviewing with Facebook months ago and he doesn’t seem to hold my “Bearness” against me, seeing as how he is a Stanford Cardinal and all, this comes as a bit of a surprise Perhaps it’s our mutual respect for entrepreneurship that allows us to find middle ground:
“Steven, great to hear from you and the update is fantastic. Well done on the travels and deciding to make the next move. I look forward to hearing what’s next. Chat soon, Arul “
Arul went on in his email about wanting to make an introduction to a start up that he has a relationship with. Simply amazing the connection one makes by just putting himself out there!
- Jim Barkow, Business Development, Shopping.com – Chew on this one for a moment. Jim works for Shopzilla’s #1 competitor, in a similar role and responded to my email, congratulating me on my resignation and offered to help “make connections wherever possible. (Perhaps he is just excited about not having to go up against me with prospective distribution deals! ;-)) More on Jim later.
- Peter Suhayda, CEO Travelgrove –Peter has got a great travel comparison site, Travel Grove and also works on a variety of other projects, continuously pushing the envelope to build new business and create new opportunity. Peter provided a lot of motivation with his well wishes:
“Hi Steven,Glad to hear that you will also go after some big passionate dreams. I have survived as well and I am sure you will as well. ou just have to keep pounding at it. I am doing very well with my little business and I would love to also help in any way that I can”
Only two weeks old and already an audience of movers and shakers lending their support for the entrepreneurial cause!!!!! Got to love it! ![]()
